Yes, I’m as shocked as you. Is Ben Affleck really something we want to associate with greatness? Yes, he rocked in Armageddon, but that’s more Michael Bay’s fault than Ben’s achievement. But first we have to remember he has shocked us before. We we’re perplexed when we saw Gone Baby Gone too. WTF. This was actually … good. Really, really good. A bit too long, but overall, wow.
This time he amps it up without going Bay-amp. It’s about some bank robbers/friends in grittiest part of Charlestown, Boston. That’s the story. Simple. Boom. It’s a heist film. Like Heat. Yes, we can actually mention those two in the same sentence without remorse or blushing. But it’s also about something else and more too. He brings us some fucking ridiculous car chases, absolute high-intense nerve-thrilling shootouts, builds suspense, excitement, action – but also the drama. It’s a story about friendship, loyalty, family, love and betrayal. Great characters, storyline, darkly humor, and authenticity. You feel Doug’s pain and struggle the whole way. Plus, it also made me love Jeremy Renner who I never felt rocked that much in the extremely overrated The Hurt Locker. Only problem is that they showed another trailer for an upcoming film, where Ben plays against Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper in The Company Men – great ensemble – but it’s a feelgood film that makes you wanna vomit a bit in your mouth. But for now – all is forgiven, Ben, I’m in awe.
We should obviously wait for The Social Network before we crown the movie of the year, but we live carp diem, so right now The Town owns.
